Phoenix, AZ - July 1, 2009 - After passing the House and Senate at the urging of pro-life
groups during the 2009 legislative session,
HB2400 "Partial Birth Abortion Act,"
HB2564 "Abortion Consent Act,"
& SB1175 "Prohibition of abortions performed by non-physicians," three of the most pro-life bills ever proposed in the state of Arizona just landed on
Governor Jan Brewer's desk this morning.
Responding to a request for comment, the bills' sponsor
Rep. Nancy Barto summarized the bills:
The
Abortion Consent Act fixes our abortion statutes, empowering women to make informed decisions about their healthcare, strengthening the parent -child relationship by ensuring parents are involved in their minor daughters' critical healthcare decisions and protecting the civil rights of health care professionals who should not be forced to choose between keeping their job and participating in an abortion.
Clarifying that no person other than a licensed physician may perform a surgical abortion,
SB1175 is extremely important since Nurse Practitioners and other non-doctors are not equipped to deal with complications arising from a surgical abortion. Women's lives will be saved because of this clarification.
Passing an Arizona
ban on Partial-Birth Abortions, a gruesome procedure that is never medically necessary, will allow any violations to be prosecuted at the state level. Ending the practice expresses respect for the dignity of human life.
Rep. Nancy K. Barto
