MSNBC has more evidence of McCain calling himself a maverick, which was before he told Newsweek this week that he isn't a maverick. More election-year posturing himself as a conservative, which isn't going so well for him running against JD Hayworth, who has a lifetime American Conservative rating of 97 compared to McCain's most recent 63 rating.

His 2008 campaign ran an ad called "Original Mavericks." From that ad, "He battled Republicans and reformed Washington."
The subtitle of his book: "Worth the Fighting For: The Education of an American Maverick, and the Heroes Who Inspired Him."
