Even with early balloting, not a single vote will be counted until November 4th. That means no one knows what the outcome of the election will be - whether it's at the state or federal level. Campaigns are spending thousands and even millions of dollars on polling, sometimes with the express purpose of convincing people that the race is over and they shouldn't bother voting. It can be tough not to be psyched out by these mind games. First, don't forget Who is in control. Psalm 47:8 reminds us: "God reigns over the nations; God sits on his holy throne." God doesn't fall off the throne when a new poll is released. As we are bombarded by information about which candidates are projected to win or how certain groups are voting, let's take time to pray instead of becoming anxious. Join us on November 2 at the Solemn Prayer Assemblies in Phoenix, Tucson, or Flagstaff. Second, take action. Volunteer to make phone calls or walk neighborhoods for Prop 102 or for a legislative candidate. And, whether you're encouraged or discouraged by the polls you read about in the media, it is still imperative that you vote. Treat your vote as if it will decide the election. If you give up and start thinking your vote doesn't matter, you are throwing away your opportunity to have a voice in our government. As the saying goes, bad leaders are elected by good people who don't vote. Remember, Prop 102 could be decided by a handful of votes, and key races for the Arizona Senate and House may well depend on 10, 20, or 50 votes. So, don't lose heart, don't grow weary, and don't give up. |
