Congressman Trent Franks Commends the Iranian People Who are Protesting the Ahmadinejad Regime

Congressman Trent Franks (AZ-02) issued the following statement in response to the thousands of Iranian students who are staging protests at universities across Iran today, calling for an end to President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad's regime.

"Even though the President pursues a policy of naive appeasement with the virulent Iranian regime regarding their nuclear program, the Iranian people should be assured that there are many American officials who they can count as friends in their quest for freedom, dignity, and human rights. I commend the Iranian people who continue to demonstrate to the world their courage to oppose an illegitimate government that neither recognizes nor protects their God-given rights of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness."

In response to the current Iranian regime's radical defiance of the international community through ongoing human rights abuses and continued pursuit of a nuclear weapons capability, Congressman Franks introduced H.R. 3832, the "Peace Through Strength Act," which would strengthen the United States' sanctions on Iran and would require the Secretary of Defense to develop and maintain viable military options to prevent the successful development or deployment of nuclear weapons by the Iranian government.
