AFP/Goldwater Institute: Milton Friedman birthday party Friday

This Friday, July 29, the Arizona chapter of Americans for Prosperity Foundation will celebrate the achievements of Dr. Milton Friedman, as part of a national day of recognition for the Nobel laureate economist, his work, his theories, and his contributions to political change. The Friedman Legacy for Freedom Day, sponsored by the Foundation for Educational Choice and the Milton and Rose D. Friedman Foundation, is being celebrated at 87 events in 46 States and six countries.

The AFPF-Arizona birthday party will take place on July 29 from 6:30 to 8:30 pm at the Goldwater Institute in Phoenix.  The free event (what Milton would call an "unpriced" event) will feature light beverages and hors d'oeuvres. (More event details and RSVP info are pasted below.)  We will read the top-rated essays that were submitted as part of our recent Milton Friedman Legacy for Freedom essay contest, and we will also explore how Dr. Friedman and his free-market theories have benefited mankind and how those theories can move our country forward amidst current economic uncertainty.

About Dr. Milton Friedman

July 29 will be the 99th anniversary of the birth of Dr. Friedman, who passed away in November 2006.  He is widely regarded as one of the world's most influential promoters of economic freedom.  He argued that the voluntary choices of individuals, not the dictates of government, should be the default mode of human life.  His revolutionary work in economic theory earned him the Nobel Prize in 1976.

Although he typically is recognized for his economic contributions, Dr. Friedman spent the last decade of his life fighting to bring educational freedom to all of America's children.  In 1996, he and his wife Rose founded the Foundation for Educational Choice to promote his vision for universal school choice-an idea he first proposed in 1955.

AFPF-Arizona invited Arizona activists, students, and friends of freedom to submit essays by Friday, July 15.  At the birthday party and awards event on the evening of July 29, we will read several of the top-rated essays, as judged by our panel of readers.  We will award $100 and a trophy to the highest-rated essayist, and $50 and a trophy to the runner-up.  We will post the top-rated essays to the AFPF-Arizona website, and will assist those essayists in getting their pieces published in local print newspapers and/or web media.
