Illegal Immigrant Deported Five Times Faces the Death Penalty

from the Maricopa County Attorney's Office -

Case Shows Dangers Posed by Border Crisis

Today, County Attorney Andrew Thomas announced that his office will seek the death penalty against Demetro Acosta-Uribe (DOB12/23/64) for the brutal murder of Ivan Santos in Phoenix. According to police reports the victim’s body was found in May, 2007 in the front yard of a west Phoenix home. The victim had been shot to death after he was bound and his head covered in plastic wrap. Two other men were also found on the property, restrained in the same manner. Neither had been shot, but one of the victims would have suffocated had a neighbor not rescued him. Police allege Santos was shot and killed as he tried to escape. In July, Phoenix police arrested Acosta-Uribe.

The defendant is a citizen of Mexico and had been deported five times.

*The last deportation took place on May 7th, 2004. He was also deported:

  • November 21st, 2003
  • September 18th, 1997
  • July 9th, 1993
  • April 29th, 1988

*The Maricopa County Attorney’s Office is releasing the deportation dates despite a federal policy that claims releasing the dates of official deportation would violate Acosta-Uribe’s privacy. This office has concluded the public’s right to know is more important than a federal policy that has no basis in law, and that represents the expansion of special rights for illegal immigrants.

“This murder case is a textbook example of how wide open borders expose the Valley to violent crime,” said County Attorney Thomas. “It is amazing—but, sadly, all too common—that a criminal suspect who had been deported from this country five times was back again, committing more crimes. The government’s continuing failure to control our borders has made Maricopa County’s residents vulnerable to the worst kinds of violence.”

Politico Mafioso and Think Right AZ are not the most popular political blogs in AZ

According to alexa, the authoritative website ranking service on the internet, and contrary to assertions by the nude elephants over at Politico Mafioso, the two RINO AZ blogs, Politico Mafioso and Think Right AZ are fairly low in popularity relative to many of the other political blogs in Arizona. In fact, Politico Mafioso is so low it doesn't even make the rankings.** Blognetnews/arizona, the aggregator of AZ political blogs which just revamped its site and is looking more impressive, frequently gives those two sites high rankings, probably because those RINOs have figured out how to artificially jack up their rankings. The ranking system on Blognetnews is bizarre; this site was ranked #2 last week but is now #15 - even though our traffic actually increased over the past week. The site currently listed as #2 is the liberal site Sustainability, Equity, Development, which didn't even make the alexa rankings. This is pretty funny considering they slammed Pullen for the Party for not having any comments on its blog - but at least Pullen for the Party made it into the alexa rankings, which is more than they can say. Sonoran Alliance is the #1 site in Arizona according to alexa, which makes sense if you look at their sitemeter stats and ask folks around town which blogs they frequent.

Sonoran Alliance - 1,293,491 - #1 in AZ
AZ Political Intel - 1,995,881
Red State Arizona - 2,626,090
Arizona Political Heat - 2,701,035
Yellow Sheet Report - 3,562,998
Think Right AZ - 4,175,862
Seeing Red AZ - 8,708,613
Pullen for the Party - 9,413,375
Espressopundit - failed to make the rankings
Arizona Report - failed to make the rankings
Sustainability, Equity, Development - failed to make the rankings
Rum, Romanism & Rebellion - failed to make the rankings
Politico Mafioso - failed to make the rankings**

Hey Nude Elephants - maybe if you wouldn't post so many McPain cheerleading posts, you'd increase your readership!

**Politico Mafioso notes that they are ranked on alexa under a different variation of their domain name. We checked it out, and sure enough, they were there - still in last place however of all of the local blogs ranked there! 9,442,523. Doesn't change much.

Revolting Development - New Times article on Phoenix subsidy to City North development

Sarah Fenske of the Phoenix New Times has an outstanding investigative piece on the $97 million dollar subsidy City of Phoenix officials are giving to the lavish City North development project in North Phoenix. She notes this type of corporate welfare is so bad the Wall Street Journal had a piece on it, two of the City Council candidates Mayor Gordon endorsed are now running away from supporting it, and the state legislature has since passed a law prohibiting Maricopa and Pima Counties from ever doing it again. Yet - Mayor Gordon says he still does not regret the decision. The Goldwater Institute notes that if Phoenix hadn't promised the subsidy to City North, it wouldn't need to ask for a tax increase on the ballot this fall for police and firemen.

More distorted news coverage on Horizon's Journalists' Roundtable

Friday night's Journalists' Roundtable on Horizon was a disappointment as usual. The left wing journalists failed to even mention the landmark premiere of the AZ Federation of Taxpayers' annual scorecard on local governments which was issued this week .... Considering elections are just around the corner on Tuesday, the omission was clearly purposeful.

Of the lefties on Friday night's show, Howie Fischer was the most blatantly biased. He stated that hotels and the hospitality industry are going to be particularly hurt by employer sanctions. As we've learned from history (which the left chooses to ignore), the market will adapt and this includes the hotel industry. If there isn't enough labor available, costs will go up and/or people will take less vacations. It's not rocket science. However, we all know that unskilled legal workers will step forward from somewhere (as they're already doing around the country at meatpacking plants that are being raided by the feds and having their illegal workers removed), the jobs vacated by illegal immigrants will be filled, and the media crying wolf will conveniently forget that they ever cried wolf. Does this remind anyone of the Pavlovian dog? (well, it wouldn't remind the media because the Pavlovian dog is a lesson in our past which they've likely chosen to ignore)

Howie also asserted that people in Phoenix don't care about Phoenix being a sanctuary city. Oh really? Then why is I.C.E. now responding to every single phone call from Phoenix police reporting illegal immigrants, "resulting in the arrests of more than 6,000 undocumented immigrants over the past 12 months, twice as many as the year before?" They're not doing it out of the kindness of their hearts, nor because of the Bush administration, whose position on illegal immigration has been amnesty. They're doing it because Phoenix residents and police are fed up with Phoenix being designated a sanctuary city, which was done by an administrative city ordinance - not by the legislature or popular vote through the ballot initiative process.

Poll: Hispanic Immigrants Take Very Strong Pro-Life Stand on Abortion

83% of Hispanics oppose abortion (higher than the regular population), and majorities of both Catholic and Protestant Hispanics supported Bush over Kerry in the last election. A majority of Hispanics in Washington, D.C., don't align themselves with the Democrat Party. Don't listen to the Democrat cheerleaders in the media who try to tell you Hispanics aren't conservative.

LifeNews.com Editor
September 5, 2007

Washington, DC (LifeNews.com) -- The pro-life movement has a key ally and the support comes from an unlikely source that's producing considerable consternation on another political issue -- Hispanic immigrants. A new survey of incoming Hispanics finds that they don't have attachments to the Democratic Party and are pro-life on abortion.

The Congressional Hispanic Leadership Institute polled Hispanic immigrants in the Washington metropolitan area. The study consisted of 279 one-on-one interviews among immigrants of Hispanic descent.

In total, 83 percent of the Hispanics in the survey oppose abortion CHLI said and, even among liberals, 60% oppose abortion.

More specifically, 52 percent said they strongly opposed abortion and 28 percent said they were somewhat opposed to abortion. Only 15 percent said they support legal abortions.

Raimundo Rojas, the Hispanic outreach coordinator for the National Right to Life Committee, told LifeNews.com that the poll validates what pro-life advocates have been saying for years about reaching out to Hispanic voters.

"Another poll, more statistics and numbers that prove yet again that Hispanics in general, are pro-life, pro-American, and very conservative on most social issues," he said.

:Yet nearly 50 percent of those polled felt that elected officials don't care about them. This should serve as yet another wake up call to pro-life politicians and political parties who want to court Hispanics on their issues," Rojas explained.

"The pro-abortion movement has nothing to offer Hispanics but disdain, this poll shows that Latinos are open to social conservatism and that we value life," he told LifeNews.com. "Let's hope the powers that be are listening and will act upon yet another recitation of statistics that show where Latinos lean politically."

Octavio Hinojosa, CHLI Executive Director, said, in a statement that LifeNews.com obtained, that the Latino group's survey found Hispanic "overwhelmingly oppose legal abortion and believe in the importance of regularly attending church services."

"These conservative trends provide an interesting picture of today's Hispanic immigrant ," it said. "they support preserving their strong family values."

Other surveys of Hispanic voters find similar results when it comes to a pro-life position on abortion.

Conducted by Miami-based Encuesta Inc., an independent market research and opinion polling firm, a November 2006 poll asked both Hispanic and non-Hispanic voters to consider which political issues were important in deciding their vote.

Some 64 percent of Hispanics said abortion was very important while 40 percent of non-Hispanic voters said abortion was important, a difference of 24 percent.
Reaching out to Latino voters can be a key to victory for pro-life candidates.

A post-election poll conducted by the University of Akron, showed that the abortion issue helped President Bush make considerable gains in the 2004 elections among Catholics and Hispanics.

According to the survey, some 63 percent of Hispanic Protestants supported Bush in 2004 compared with just 32 percent in 2000. Meanwhile, Latino Catholics gave Bush a 53 to 47 percent advantage over the Massachusetts senator, also an increase over Bush's 2000 numbers.
Even in a primarily liberal urban area, the survey showed that a majority of DC Hispanic immigrants do not align themselves to the Democratic Party.

Al Melvin continues to campaign early with strong challenge to Democrat Senator Charlene Pesquiera

(Melvin is challenging Democrat incumbent Charlene Pesquiera in District 26)

ANOTHER MONTH CLOSER TO VICTORY!

Hard to believe it has been a year since we celebrated our victory in the 2006 primary. We got a late start on that campaign, but thanks to many of you we surprised a lot of folks by winning by more than 2,600 votes.

So you can understand why we're so excited this year. We're off to an earlier start and we have a lot more volunteers than we did last time. We've learned so much in the meantime that we will be running an even better campaign than before.

We have begun to knock on doors as the evenings have gotten cooler and our pace will certainly pick up over the next month or so as the summer heat fades. If you would like to walk with me through your own neighborhood, let me know and we'll get it on the schedule. I've done that with a few folks already and the response is really encouraging.

In spite of what you read in the newspapers or see on television, the voters of our district have not given up on the Republican brand. What they have given up on is Republicans who talk the talk at election time but then fail to walk the walk. When these voters hear from us directly, they get fired up and urge us on. In the last month of walking we have had more than 30 homeowners tell us that they will put up yard signs for us next year. That might not sound like much to you, but over the next year that would project to nearly 400 homes with Melvin for Senate yard signs!

Our focus remains on collecting signatures and building our campaign organization. We know that our eventual Democrat opponent will present a real challenge, but we're in great shape to run that race. We still are not sure if we will have a primary or not. One Republican has been ''exploring'' the race since June, trying to decide if he is going to run or not. More than ten weeks have passed and he still has not reached a decision and the people we hear from are not sure what his intentions are.

As always, if you would like to sign a petition or carry a petition with you to collect signatures, please call (520) 429-8083 and I will be happy to send one to you. My email address is almelvin@wbhsi.net.

Please check out my website at www.votealmelvin.com and please call me at (520) 429-8083 or (520) 825-2894 if you have any thoughts or concerns to share with me. I would appreciate it very much if you would forward this email update to your friends.

Best regards, Al Melvin

Latest update from Center for AZ Policy - Fall kickoff luncheon, Bioethics conference

In this issue:
(1) Get Ready. Set. Go!
(2) September 26: CAP Fall Kick-off Luncheon
(3) October 18-21: Washington Briefing
(4) November 3: Bioethics Century - Facing our Future

(1) Get Ready. Set. Go!

Despite our blessed Arizona temperatures, summer's over. It's time to "get ready" and "set" for the coming months. Over the next 14 months, our nation will engage in our most critical task as citizens - electing our next President. The next President will face many critical issues directly impacting our families. Will we have a U.S. Supreme Court that interprets the law or makes the law? Will our nation be secure from the Islamic terrorist and other threats? Will our preborn children be protected and finally granted their right to life? When my husband and I visited the site of the D-Day invasion in Normandy last month, I was awestruck by the bravery of the men who fought for our freedom against Nazi Germany. I also pondered whether our nation today truly understands the threats we face from Islamic terrorism.

For the next 14 months, I hope you will join us as we pray for our nation's and our state's future. Pray as we learn more about the presidential candidates and their positions on the issues critical for our families. Pray as we elect new leaders for Arizona. To get started, mark your calendars and register today at azpolicy.org for key events this fall.

(2) September 26: CAP Fall Kick-off Luncheon

Join us to hear Marvin Olasky talk about "Enduring for Things that Matter." One of the leading Christian thinkers and writers of our time, Olasky is the editor of WORLD magazine, vice-president for academic affairs at King's College in New York City, and a professor at the University of Texas. Take a moment to read today's Townhall column by Dr. Olasky about a worldwide Muslim offensive on freedom of speech and the threat posed to our own freedoms of religion and speech. Luncheon seating is limited. Sign-up today.

(3) October 18-21: Washington Briefing

On October 18-21, join me and our allies from Family Research Council, Focus on the Family, and the Alliance Defense Fund for the second annual Washington Briefing. Featuring numerous national experts on the key family issues of our day, the briefing will include a straw poll on the presidential election. The presidential candidates have been invited as well and I would expect several of them to be there speaking in person. The gala dinner will honor Dr. James Dobson. Check out the details. (Airfare's often less expensive if you fly into Baltimore with ground transportation into D.C. being relatively inexpensive.)

(4) November 3: Bioethics Century - Facing our Future

Our website now has a special message from Joni Eareckson Tada about the importance of this conference.

First time state's human smuggling law used on drop houses

This just in from the Maricopa county attorney's office -

First Drop House Human Smuggling Indictments Handed Down
Another Important Step in the Fight Against Illegal Immigration

Eight people have been indicted after being found by sheriff’s deputies inside a Glendale drop house, County Attorney Andrew Thomas announced today. One of the defendants is accused of being a drop house guard and an active participant in a human smuggling operation. The rest face charges for paying a coyote to smuggle them illegally into the United States. This represents the first time the state’s human smuggling law has been applied to illegal immigrants arrested as part of a drop house raid.

Instead of arresting the guard and handing over the other seven alleged co-conspirators to Immigration and Customs Enforcement, the Sheriff’s Office arrested the illegal immigrants and charged them with violating the state human smuggling statute.

“The Sheriff’s Office has been a dedicated and committed partner in the fight against illegal immigration,” said County Attorney Andrew Thomas. “I hope other local law enforcement agencies will follow Sheriff Joe Arpaio’s example and arrest illegal immigrants who have violated Arizona’s human smuggling law.”

The drop house that led to the charges was discovered on August 21.

“Hiring coyotes puts Valley neighborhoods in harm’s way by providing financial support for dangerous drop houses,” Thomas added. “Most drop houses are in the middle of Valley neighborhoods. The law-abiding citizens who live in these neighborhoods have a right to be protected from the crime and violence associated with illegal immigration. ”

In this issue:
(1) We're Baaaack!
(2) Choose Life License Plates!
(3) Maricopa County to Defend Sex Club Law!
(4) Right to Life Conference This Week!

(1) We're Baaaack!

After a taking a break for the month of August, Family Facts is back! I hope your summer has been a blessed one!

(2) Choose Life License Plates!

Last week we received notice that the Choose Life license plate case has been scheduled for oral arguments in front of the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals in San Francisco on October 15. Two years ago the Federal District Court of Arizona ruled against the Arizona Life Coalition in its lawsuit against the state's License Plate Commission. The commission had denied the coalition's request to produce "Choose Life" plates because their message was deemed to be "offensive." The coalition had previously issued custom license plates for a number of other non-profit organizations. The Arizona Life Coalition is represented by CAP's General Counsel, Peter Gentala, and by our friends at the Alliance Defense Fund. Please keep Peter and the rest of Arizona Life Coalition's legal team in your prayers as they prepare for this next phase of litigation.

(3) Maricopa County to Defend Sex Club Law!

Our own Peter Gentala was the first to break the story about the City of Tempe's failure to defend Arizona's new statute in his August 23 AzPolicyBlog post. He was also was first to write about Federal District Court Judge Frederick Martone's stinging rebuke of Tempe's behavior in the case in attempting to keep the details of the settlement secret from Tempe taxpayers by asking to have the settlement sealed by the court. Fortunately, the Maricopa County Attorney's Office, under the leadership of Andrew Thomas, has announced its intention to step in and defend the state law in question, which prevents new sex clubs from locating within 1,320 feet of churches, schools, and parks. The law, which passed overwhelmingly in both the Arizona House of Representatives and Senate, was drafted with the assistance of The Center for Arizona Policy. CAP applauds the Maricopa County Attorney's Office and Timothy La Sota, Andrew Thomas' Special Assistant, for their willingness to give this law the wholehearted and meaningful defense in court that it deserves.

September AZ Life Times

Dear Friend of Life,
With our annual State Conference just a few days away, Arizona Right to Life has been busy preparing new and exciting ways for pro-life people to build a legacy of life. Below are just a few of the ways local chapters and friends have been spreading the message of respect and equality for human life. Keep up the good work everyone!
In This Issue
High School Students Break "The Barrier"
Tempe Right to Life Donates Scholarship to ASU Club
AZRTL Pro-life Booth Visits Coconino County Fair
40 Days for Life
Assisted Suicide Alert!
Upcoming Events!

High School Students Break "The Barrier"

A local troupe of high school artists have combined music, theatre, and dance into an unforgettable experience geared towards helping their peers make healthy choices. A Tour Of Movement Inspiring Kids through all 12 grades, or Atomik12 for short, began with eight teenage girls who came together to create a drama about anorexia. Word about their dynamic presentation quickly spread and they were soon asked to make presentations on other topics, including pro-life ones. Heather Boyd, creator of the group said, "During our season, Karen Hartman contacted us about performing a show for the Wickenburg Right to Life dinner. After much prayer "The Barrier" was created, encompassing a rather unique way of presenting the "life" message. We are anxious to bring this "piece" to the Wickenburg Right to Life Dinner and hope that it may bring healing to those hurting from either miscarriage or abortion while inspiring others that life exists inside the 'Barrier' of the womb."

If you are interested in seeing the passionate and engaging work of Atomik12, consider attending the Wickenburg Right to Life "Celebrate Life" dinner on September 27th. Tickets are ten dollars each and include an Italian dinner, door prizes, Atomik-12's performance of "The Barrier", and nationally renowned speaker Mark Crutcher. This is one evening you won't want to miss! Contact Karen Hartman at 928-684-2199 or Terry Snodgrass at 928-684-2758 for more information. Click Here for Event Flyer (It's under "Wickenburg Right to Life" in the local news section of the AZRTL home page).

Tempe Right to Life Donates Scholarship to ASU Club

With its alcohol-fueled hook up culture and lack of parental oversight, many young people who attend college can easily fall into the trap of contracting an STD or having an unintended pregnancy. Sadly, the majority of these young people, burdened with the lack of a support system, a fear of confronting their parents, and the stress of their academic workloads will choose abortion as the solution to the consequences of their sexual experiences. In fact, according to the Alan Guttmacher Institute 45% of all abortions are obtained by women between the ages of 18 and 24.

This is why reaching college students is more important than ever to stem the tide of an abortion culture on campus. Along with confronting this mindset, pro-life students on campus have to contend with pro-abortion professors and faculty hampering their efforts to defend the sanctity of human life. Fortunately, the students involved in Arizona State University's Students for Life (ASU-SFL) braved these challenges and continually engage the student body on life issues. Two years ago they hosted a pro-life exhibit that the ASU faculty tried to stop at all costs (even going so far as demanding ASU-SFL pay thousands of dollars in insurance fees not required of other groups wanting to conduct similar exhibits). Last year they hosted the first Regional Students for Life Conference and continue to host a pro-life table on campus. Because of this, Tempe Right to Life is donating their annual college scholarship to the club in order to help them with their activities such as campus exhibits and donation drives for organizations like Maggie's Place. ASU Students for Life will receive the award in the amount of $1,000 at the annual AZRTL State Conference this Friday, September 7th.

AZRTL Pro-life Booth Visits Coconino County Fair

Among the towering pines of Flagstaff, Arizona Right to Life hosted its pro-life booth at the Coconino County Fair. AZRTL enjoyed a tremendous amount of success at the fair as hundreds of fair-goers, young and old alike, came to view our intricate fetal models and reviewed our plethora of literature on subjects like abortion, euthanasia, and stem cell research. Volunteers said that most people who visited the booth were grateful for their presence and urged them to continue defending life. In fact, some people expressed an interest in forming a Flagstaff chapter of Arizona Right to Life. We encourage anyone interested in forming a local chapter to contact the AZRTL main office at 602-285-0063 or visit the "chapters" section of our website.

40 Days for Life

At the end of September, churches across the United States will be banding together to form a grassroots movement to oppose abortion in their local communities. This campaign was born out of a frustration that numerous Christian churches have fallen silent about abortion and have become apathetic or indifferent, failing to "speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves." Now, a grassroots movement of Christians is mobilizing to change this abortion-minded culture through 40 days of prayer and fasting, but why 40 days you may ask? Throughout the Bible 40 days was used to transform and empower many of God's prophets such as Moses, David, and Elijah. Even Jesus spent 40 days in the desert to accomplish God's will.

The Coalition for Life, a group of 60 pro-life organizations and churches in College Station, Texas who originated the idea, claim the campaign has generated huge results in the various cities and towns that have implemented it. These results range from 20% reduction in abortion rates to dramatic increases in the number of pro-life volunteers. If you would like to learn more about the national campaign click here. To learn more about our state's campaign, especially the 40 Days of Prayer in Tucson, click here.

Assisted Suicide Alert!
PHOENIX, August 24, 2007 (LifeSiteNews.com) - Two professional death "assistants" are under murder investigation for helping a mentally ill woman commit suicide without the knowledge of her close and loving family members, the Phoenix New Times reports.

Jana Van Voorhis, a 58-year-old Phoenix woman, was found by her sister Vicki Thomas and her husband Jared lying dead in bed in a townhouse. Because of Jana's mentally unstable condition, her sister expected to see pills lying about as the cause of her death. The couple was surprised, however, to find a neat and orderly scene that they said looked "staged." Afterwards, evidence emerged that Jana had contacted a radical suicide group called Final Exit Nextwork (FEN). The Times reports that FEN is an offshoot of the Hemlock Society, which was founded in 1980 by author Derek Humphrey.

Potential "clients" must contact the society and pay a $50 fee to become a member. The organization had sent in two "guides" to help her die of asphyxiation by breathing helium gas from under a face-mask. Helium is one of the preferred drugs used by suicide groups because traces of it are difficult to detect afterwards in the blood stream. The two suicide "assistants" 79-year old Wye Hale-Rowe, a retired family therapist and great-grandmother, and Frank Langsner, a retired college professor, were FEN volunteers.
