AFP: Three AZ Congressmen earn 100% on Freedom from Foreign Oil Scorecard

Congratulations to Reps. Jeff Flake, Trent Franks, and John Shadegg, for scoring 100 percent on Americans for Prosperity’s Freedom from Foreign Oil Scorecard. The scorecard ranks U.S. Representatives based on their support for – or opposition to – policies that would lower gas and energy prices by increasing American supplies and making domestic production less expensive. The scorecard uses a composite score of eight roll call votes and co-sponsorship of three initiatives.

The Freedom from Foreign Oil Scorecard is available at the AFP homepage: www.americansforprosperity.org

Unfortunately, Reps. Gabrielle Giffords, Raúl Grijalva, and Ed Pastor scored zeroes on the scorecard. Those Representatives were among 156 House lawmakers to score zero for their failure to support any measures that would lessen the financial burden on American motorists.

Rep. Harry Mitchell scored 13 percent, and Rep. Rick Renzi scored an 88 percent.

In total, 172 U.S. Representatives--including Arizona Reps. Jeff Flake, Trent Franks, Rick Renzi, and John Shadegg were designated “Friends of the American Motorist” for achieving scores of 70 percent or higher. Reps. Giffords, Grijalva, and Pastor received zeroes on the scorecard because of their opposition to expanded oil exploration and development in the Arctic and the Outer Continental Shelf, and their support for a cap-and-trade regulatory regime that would result in a massive energy tax hike. The three politicians also voted to hike taxes on U.S. energy producers, which would discourage domestic production and raise energy costs on American consumers.

The “Freedom from Foreign Oil” scorecard is part of AFP’s ongoing nationwide effort to expose the unaffordable costs of global warming alarmism, especially with regard to domestic energy policies. The campaign includes a “No Climate Tax Hike Pledge,” and a nationwide hot air balloon tour to rally grassroots opposition to unaffordable energy tax hikes being advanced in the name of “global warming.”

ADF: Reclaiming pastors' right to speak the truth from the pulpit

The Alliance Defense Fund has started a new project helping pastors to speak out about government and other areas they've been silenced from speaking out of fear they'd lose their tax-exempt status.

The Pulpit Initiative

Reclaiming pastors’ constitutional right to speak Truth from the pulpit.

Historically, churches have emphatically, and with great passion, spoken Scriptural truth from the pulpit about government and culture. Historians have stated that America owes its independence in great degree to the moral force of the pulpit. Pastors have proclaimed Scriptural truth throughout history on great moral issues such as slavery, women’s suffrage, child labor and prostitution. Pastors have also spoken from the pulpit with great frequency for and against various candidates for government office.

All that changed in 1954 with the passage of the “Johnson amendment” which restricted the right of churches and pastors to speak Scriptural truth about candidates for office. The Johnson amendment was proposed by then-Senator Lyndon Johnson, and it changed the Internal Revenue Code to prohibit churches and other non-profit organizations from supporting or opposing a candidate for office. After the Johnson amendment passed, churches faced a choice of either continuing their tradition of speaking out or silencing themselves in order to retain their church’s tax exemption. The Internal Revenue Service, in conjunction with radical organizations like Americans United for Separation of Church and State, have used the Johnson amendment to create an atmosphere of intimidation and fear for any church that dares to speak Scriptural truth about candidates for office or issues.

It is time for the intimidation and threats to end. Churches and pastors have a constitutional right to speak freely and truthfully from the pulpit – even on candidates and voting – without fearing loss of their tax exemption.

We are seeking pastors to stand with us and once again reclaim their constitutional right to speak the Truth.

Learn more about how you can stand with us.

Majority rule would curb state spending

Excellent article by Clint Bolick of the Goldwater Institute in the Tribune yesterday on the Majority Rule initiative. Some excerpts -
The question presented by Proposition 105 — the Majority Rule initiative — is as simple as it is compelling: Should a minority of Arizona voters have the power to forever commit the state to increased spending and taxation?

Most spending and taxing initiatives are backed by powerful special interest groups that have failed to persuade our elected representatives to do their bidding. Instead, wielding lavishly funded advertising campaigns, they turn to the ballot box, knowing that with low turnout they will only have to persuade perhaps a third of the electorate to vote “yes.” They never reveal to voters that once adopted, the spending and taxation will be locked in forever unless repealed by subsequent initiative.

Fife Symington on Chairman Pullen's bike ride

Have you heard? Chairman Pullen is pedaling toward victory in a 500 mile bike ride across Arizona!

That’s right, Chairman Pullen left on Saturday morning from the South Rim of the Grand Canyon, and is riding his bike (and conserving energy!) all the way to Tombstone.

Why is he doing this? Because with less than three months left before the general election, it is imperative that we raise awareness and do all that we can to ensure Republican victories in November.

But Randy needs your help!

Click Here to Pedal to Victory

I have pledged $1 for every mile that Randy rides during his Victory Ride 2008; but my donation is not enough.

I need you to make your pledge today, and join me in supporting Randy on his trip.

Click Here to Pedal to Victory

I need to raise $50,000 today, for the Chairman’s Victory Ride and I am up to the challenge.

Will you help?

Please logon to www.azgop.org right now and make your pledge. If just 100 of you will pledge $1 per mile, we will reach our goal of $50,000!

I hope I can count on your support and I hope you’ll pass this email on to your friends who support the AZGOP.

Click Here to Pedal to Victory

Sincerely,
Fife Symington

Former Arizona Governor

P.S. I hope you join me in supporting Chairman Pullen and pledge just 25 cents, 50 cents, or even $1 for the Arizona Victory Ride 2008!

Republic interview with Jolene Penson for JP

Jolene Penson, jp4jp.org, has been endorsed by County Attorney Andrew Thomas.

Penson wants to make difference as JP

Some excerpts -

• What are your goals as justice of the peace if you are elected?

One idea I would like to look into is providing a night court and/or weekend court to better serve the public. I would also like to have more justice with accountability, possibly working with the HOA's and property owners to establish community service for people found guilty of property crimes. The community service would have to be performed in the same community where the property damage occurred.

Dismissed! Meddling in a Republican Primary backfires for Zerby's liberal backers

from Sen. Jack Harper -

Today, the senate ethics committee found that State Senator Jack Harper violated no Senate Rules in clearing the way for the vote on the Marriage Amendment. Democrat Senator Ken Cheuvront, as a well-timed choreograph to meddle in the primary election between Harper and liberal challenger John Zerby, filed an ethics complaint on false pretenses as early ballot were about to be mailed into Legislative District Four. After weeks of meetings that Harper was not allowed to speak at, He was given a chance to make his argument about the invalidity of the faux debate carried on by two openly gay legislators in trying to defeat the Marriage Amendment. After hearing testimony from the Complainant and Harper, the Committee dismissed the charges.

Today, an Independent Expenditure committee, funding by the liberal fire union and teacher's union, sent out an automated call urging voters to watch the local news. Much to their surprise, the charges were found invalid. This implies that Senator Cheuvront may have coordinated this attack on Senator Harper at the behest of a militant liberal organization that advocates for homosexual marriage, and the unions that are financing the misstatements and lies on mailers and commercials against Harper, in support of Zerby. Curiously, Zerby has aggressively opposed the Marriage Amendment that will be on the November ballot in November. In the debate sponsored by the Citizen's Clean Election Commission, Zerby also opposed making the state property-tax cut permanent, instead advocating for the tax to come back on property owners in 2009. The estimated rate for the tax will be $39 for every $100,000 of assessed valuation. In the same debate, Zerby said he was open to new taxes and made the case for socialized healthcare.

Harper said, "This assault through the ethics committee did not work and pro-higher taxes Zerby cannot run from his statements. My challenger has pandered to homosexual-advocacy groups and labor unions, showing that he running for office as a Democrat disguised as a Republican".

Sheriff's office refutes claims that crime in Maricopa County is rising

The Tribune ran an article recently with Sheriff Arpaio's response to accusations that crime in Maricopa County unincorporated areas is increasing. (Crime has been decreasing over the past couple of years within the cities located in Maricopa County) According to the Sheriff's figures, violent crime has decreased by 10% since last year. This seems more believable, considering around 11% of the illegal immigrants have fled the state. Any drop in population is going to correlate with a drop in crime.

The sheriff also reported receiving 27% fewer life-threatening emergency calls. Although FBI statistics reveal that certain violent crimes increased, overall they decreased, with rapes decreasing by 57%.

BAMN's allegations against the AZ Civil Rights Initiative are baloney

Chairwoman Shanta Driver of the neo-communist organization BAMN made the following accusations recently against the AZ Civil Rights Initiative in the Arizona Republic. Funny, other than BAMN's wild assertions, have you seen or read about any evidence of fraud by AZCRI? I haven't seen anything, other than a BAMN protester who was arrested for assaulting a petition circulator. If there were any petition circulators illegally circulating petitions, then all of the other ballot initiatives are also affected, since the same circulators collected signatures for ALL the ballot initiatives, not just AZCRI. AZCRI simply used the same circulators the other initiatives used. The initiative looks like it will be approved shortly to be on the ballot. Making up smears will not create fraud where there is none.
We are confident that ACRI will be disqualified. We have amassed evidence, including from petition circulators themselves who are willing to step forward, of ACRI's pervasive racially targeted voter fraud and criminal violations of Arizona election law. The vast majority of circulators we encountered either tried to hide from our investigators or revealed information that they circulated ACRI in violation of Arizona law. . . . We will pursue our civil lawsuit. . . . We also call on Attorney General Terry Goddard and Gov. Janet Napolitano to launch an independent investigation.
...
In addition, we have amassed evidence that a large number, if not a majority, of the alleged signatures were gathered by people who were unqualified to circulate petitions in Arizona, which includes out-of-state residents and felons. Petition companies either disguised the identity of circulators, or actively turned a blind eye.
...
ACRI is extraordinary in the sheer scope of fraud employed. ACRI targeted homeless shelters to recruit desperate people to become circulators. One circulator who had petitioned for ballot measures for years told us that they had never seen a campaign as fraught with fraud as ACRI.

Uncle Sam GraphicThe Arizona Right to Life Political Action Committee has released its endorsements for the 2008 Arizona Primaries that will be held on September 2nd. In June the committee sent out a detailed questionnaire to every candidate for state and federal office in Arizona. Questionnaire topics included, among others, what circumstances candidates felt abortion should be legal (if ever), if physician assisted suicide or euthanasia should be legal, and whether public funds should be used to support policies that destroy innocent human life. After evaluating the candidates' answers the committee released their endorsements, which can be viewed by clicking here.

Update from Senator Jack Harper campaign

Endorsements for Senator Jack Harper's Re-election Keep Rolling In

Senator Harper announced the endorsement of several conservative groups, in addition to two of the most popular office-holders in Arizona, Sheriff Joe Arpaio and County Attorney, Andrew Thomas. In a recorded message to the Republicans of Legislative District Four, Thomas said, "Jack’s opponents are running a very misleading ad that implies that I do not support Jack and that’s simply not true. Jack Harper is a solid conservative and a great Republican. Please vote for Jack Harper for State Senate."

In addition, National Rifle Association's Political Victory Fund, The Arizona Chamber of Commerce, The Arizona Association of Realtors, The Arizona Right-to-life PAC and numerous constituents have openly sided with Senator Harper, over the pro-gay marriage, pro-higher taxes John Zerby.

On March 31st and April 2nd of this year, Senator Harper canvassed the neighborhood of John Zerby, collecting signatures for Harper's nomination petitions. Over half of the registered Republicans were home and none refused to sign Harper's nomination petition. Harper said, "If the people that know the pro-gay marriage, pro-higher taxes Zerby the best, his neighbors cannot support him, why would anyone?" In a debate sponsored by the Citizen's Clean Election Commission, Zerby opposed the Marriage Amendment and opposed the permanent elimination of the state property tax. In addition, Zerby said he was open to new taxes.

"People Overload" is here

Those of you who are active in politics on the internet, running blogs and websites, regardless of political persuasion, can empathize with this piece I just wrote. Instead of returning those 20 phone calls that have piled up, and the myriads of accumulating emails, I got this off my chest.
