New Year; New Battles

The new year brings important battles over timeless values in Arizona and across the country:
Montana's Supreme Court has ruled that doctor-assisted suicide is permitted in their state. This alarming decision is a good reminder that you're never too young to get your medical decision-making papers in order. CAP recommends authorizing someone through a healthcare power of attorney who is familiar with your values to make decisions on your behalf. (As always, speak to an attorney for advice specific to your situation). CAP's Policy Team currently is reviewing Arizona law to make sure it adequately prohibits any form of assisted suicide.
On Thursday, the New Jersey Senate voted against a bill that would have redefined marriage in that state. Along with New York and Maine, New Jersey is the third state in recent months to reject efforts to undermine marriage.
On Monday, January 11, the trial will begin in California federal court on the constitutionality of Proposition 8, which defined marriage as between one man and one woman in the Golden State. Please pray for the Alliance Defense Fund attorneys who are defending marriage.
The Arizona Legislature begins its session on Monday facing a wide range of policy issues and a monumental budget deficit. CAP will be monitoring the legislature this year to make sure our values are protected and promoted. Visit CAP's blog to make sure you are prepared and check back regularly for updates.

I invite you to join me, the CAP Team, and our friends at Arizona Call to Prayer for the annual Capitol Prayer Walk on January 11, the opening day of the 2010 legislative session. Starting the session with on-site prayer in the House and Senate and around the Capitol grounds is more important than ever during these critical times. You are welcome to join us for the entire time or as much as your schedule allows. If you cannot join in person, please put a reminder on your calendar to pray that day. Governor Brewer Making Name as Pro-Life Advocate

The pro-abortion group NARAL nominated Arizona Governor Jan Brewer to their 2009 "Hall of Shame." What a badge of honor for Gov. Brewer! Opposing NARAL means supporting pre-born children, women's health, and the conscience rights of healthcare workers. This is exactly what Governor Brewer did by signing the Abortion Consent Act into law this past year. After too many years of Janet Napolitano vetoes, we're grateful to have to a pro-life advocate in the Governor's office.
