Goldwater Institute: Oct. 2 Anniversary Celebration with President of Czech Republich Vaclav Klaus

Václav Klaus helped turn failed communist state into bastion of freedom

By Byron Schlomach, Ph.D.

Most economists are content to remain in the ivory tower and most politicians are content to let public opinion lead. Václav Klaus, a Ph.D. economist and President of the Czech Republic, has led public opinion and acted on his convictions. Today, the Czech Republic is one of the freest and fastest growing countries in Europe.

President Klaus will receive the Goldwater Award for Liberty for helping usher in an era of economic prosperity in this formerly communist country at the Goldwater Institute's 20 Anniversary Celebration on October 2.

In the 1960s, a young Václav Klaus studied economics at home, Italy, and the United States. He absorbed the lessons of Friedrich Hayek and Milton Friedman (previous Goldwater Award recipients), taking their "subversive" message back to his native land. Consequently, he was largely denied an academic career due to his belief in free markets, but emerged as Minister of Finance in 1989 when the Eastern Bloc collapsed.

For eight years, Václav Klaus challenged entrenched interests, overseeing the break-up of large state monopolies and the conversion of state enterprises to private ownership in Czechoslovakia. Often opposed by the popular former dissident, poet and president, Václav Havel, Klaus has continued the expansion of economic freedom in the Czech Republic, becoming that nation's president in 2003 and winning re-election this year.

President Klaus is one of a rare breed-a Ph.D. economist who has achieved a large measure of success in elective politics. We hope you will join us as we honor his lifetime dedication to expanding liberty.

Byron Schlomach, Ph.D, is director of economic policy at the Goldwater Institute.

Countdown: 42 Days Until Election Day

Yes, it's only a short six weeks from today until our nation elects a new President and our state elects a new state legislature, new congressional representatives, and decides to grant constitutional protection to the definition of marriage as the union of one man and one woman. Take time to assess how you will spend these next six weeks. Consider the following:

(1) 40 Days of Prayer and Fasting

Join us and fellow believers nationwide for 40 days of prayer and fasting leading up to Election Day, starting this Thursday, September 24. Consider how you and your family can participate as we seek God's will and guidance for this election through focused prayer and fasting.
CAP's Pastor Frank Carpenter shares this about fasting: Fasting can take many forms. Most commonly we think of fasting as abstaining from food. Many in Scripture abstained completely from all food and water during their fasts. Some may choose to abstain from breakfast during these 40 days, others may choose to abstain from their favorite food, or coffee, or desserts. Still others may choose to not watch television or to abstain from another favorite activity. The spiritual idea behind the fast is to sacrificially abstain from something in order to devote time to be with the Lord. As you consider a dedicated time of prayer and fasting, consider these Scriptures: Exodus 34:28; 2 Chron. 20:3; Jonah 3:5; Matt. 6:16-18; Acts 13:2-3; Acts 14:23.

(2) Watch the Saddleback Civil Forum

Pastor Rick Warren hosted this forum in late August, and it provides a fascinating, informative look at how the two major presidential candidates answered key questions about their character, issue positions, and vision. Read the transcript at www.rickwarrennews.com, or watch the video of the Forum at www.saddlebackcivilforum.com.

(3) Attend Saturday's Standing for Truth Conference

Join us for this fast-paced, high-impact event featuring David Barton, sponsored by CAP in partnership with Family Research Council and Alliance Defense Fund. Join us as we rally together to run the race set before us leading up to Election Day. Find out the why and how of standing for what's right in our state. Advanced reservations are closed, but you are welcome to join us by registering at the door starting at 8:00 a.m. For details, visit azpolicy.org.

(4) Mark Your Calendar

Plan now to join with us in a solemn prayer assembly on Sunday, November 2, at 4:00 p.m. at the State Capitol. Similar events are being considered for Flagstaff and Tucson.

(5) Volunteer to Help the Yes on 102 Campaign

Get involved by visiting www.YESforMarriage.com.

(6) Plan Voter Registration Drives

Host a voter registration drive at your church, home group, children's school, Bible study, or Sunday School class for this next Sunday, September 28, and Sunday, October 5. The deadline is October 6! For information on holding a voter registration drive, visit our Voter Information Center.

Knights of Columbus start prolife radio ads

NEWS FOR KNIGHTS

"Vote Pro-Life" radio ad begins airing nationwide today

Knights of Columbus spot features beating heart of 10 week old unborn child

New Haven, CT - September 23, 2008 -

A 30 second radio spot encouraging people to "vote pro-life" in the November elections begins running on radio stations around the United States today. It will continue to air until the November 4 election.

The ad features the sound of an unborn baby's heartbeat at 10 weeks, and the voice of a woman saying, "Listening to this makes me wonder - why would anyone question that her life has begun?" It concludes with the words, "Vote your heart. Vote Pro Life."

"The fact that the child whose heartbeat we hear is alive is simply a matter of science," Supreme Knight Carl A. Anderson said in announcing the beginning of the ad campaign. "We believe that it is vital that America's pro-life community make it clear that they will reserve their votes for candidates of either party who are committed to protecting life from conception to natural death."

Anyone can listen to or download the ad from the Knights of Columbus website, www.kofc.org.

A similar ad is planned for broadcast in Canada, where general elections are set for October 14, 2008.

The Knights of Columbus is the world's largest lay Catholic organization, with more than 1.75 million members in North and Central America, Asia and Europe. Last year, Knights donated $145 million and more than 68 million hours of volunteer time to charitable causes.

Open Letter to Senator Joseph Biden on abortion

Supreme Knight Carl Anderson sent an open letter to Senator Joseph Biden on Friday, September 19, challenging the assertion of the vice presidential candidate that Catholic teaching on abortion is not clear. The letter was published in USA Today, The Washington Times, Philadelphia Inquirer and Wilmington News Journal, among others.

Writing "as a fellow Catholic layman," Anderson said that "statements that suggest that our Church has anything less than a consistent teaching on abortion are not merely incorrect; they may lead Catholic women facing crisis pregnancies to misunderstand the moral gravity of an abortion decision."

Anderson noted that the founders of the United States "believed that we are 'endowed by [our] creator with certain unalienable rights,'' and that first among these is 'life,'" and he appealed to Biden, "as a Catholic who acknowledges that life begins at conception, to resolve to protect this unalienable right."

Illegal Immigration and the Mortgage Mess

Great article by Michelle Malkin - some excerpts -

It's no coincidence that most of the areas hardest hit by the foreclosure wave -- Loudoun County, Va., California's Inland Empire, Stockton and San Joaquin Valley, and Las Vegas and Phoenix, for starters -- also happen to be some of the nation's largest illegal alien sanctuaries.

Regional reports across the country have decried the subprime meltdown's impact on illegal immigrant "victims."

The amnesty-promoting National Council of La Raza and its Development Fund have received millions in federal funds to "counsel" their constituents on obtaining mortgages with little to no money down; the group almost succeeded in attaching a $10-million earmark for itself in one of the housing bills past this spring.

In addition, fraudsters have engaged in massive house-flipping rings using illegal aliens as straw buyers.

Thanks to lax Bush administration-approved policies allowing illegal aliens to use "matricula consular cards" and taxpayer identification numbers to open bank accounts, more forms of mortgage fraud have burgeoned.

Antenori for House news

Vote Antenori

Dear Friends

Welcome to the Antenori Campaign Newsletter. I’m running for the Arizona State legislature because I believe it is time to restore principled leadership for Southern Arizona. Early voting for the General Election begins in less than 2 weeks.

Over the past few years we have witnessed an abandonment of basic conservative principles by our leaders in Phoenix and in Washington. Uncontrolled spending, failure to enforce immigration laws, failure to develop a long term economic plan, and a failure to defend and promote strong family values has had a negative impact on our communities.

It is time to restore common sense to government by electing strong leaders that will adhere to conservative principles and lead by example.

Go to my web site and read Why I am a “Principled Conservative." After you do, I’m sure you’ll see why I’m the right person to serve in the Arizona Legislature. If you believe in principled leadership, please consider contributing to my campaign.

Thank you for your support,

Nelson Record Suggests ACLU First Not Public Safety First; New Info in County Attorney Race

Thomas Condemns Nelson's "Sweetheart Deal" for ACLU
History of Nelson Support for ACLU Suggests Soft-on-Crime Organization Would Have Unprecedented Power and Influence in County Attorney's Office

From DPS Lawsuit to Prop 100 Litigation, Questions Abound

County Attorney candidate Tim Nelson's history of support for the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) indicates the soft-on-crime organization could have unprecedented power and influence in the county prosecutor's office if Nelson becomes county attorney.

In a Nelson campaign press release on April 29, 2008, Nelson gushed he was "proud" to have been a lawyer for the ACLU.

But he failed to disclose-and actually misrepresented to at least one Valley newspaper- important facts about his relationship with the ACLU and a sweetheart deal he orchestrated to benefit his former client at the expense of law-abiding citizens.

While serving as counsel for Governor Janet Napolitano, Nelson approved the settlement of a racial-profiling lawsuit filed by the ACLU against the Arizona Department of Public Safety (DPS). The governor was a defendant in the action. As part of the controversial settlement, Nelson approved payment of $140,000 in attorney's fees to his former client, the ACLU. He did this even though there was no evidence of racial profiling by DPS troopers and the agency flatly denied engaging in that practice.

The settlement also required DPS to collect information on the race of the people they pull over and turn over the data to an advisory panel picked by the governor and the ACLU. What's more, DPS agreed that it could search vehicles only if the owner gave written consent to the search. This was a sweeping concession to the ACLU, one that courts never have required of law enforcement officers in the past.

Thomas called the federal litigation, Arnold v. DPS, a "typically frivolous ACLU lawsuit" and expressed disbelief that state tax dollars were paid out to appease the radical left-wing organization. Obvious questions surrounded the settlement agreement, some of which were voiced when it was announced. First, the lawsuit was settled after a federal judge had dismissed it, no explanation has been offered as to why the case was settled and why taxpayer money paid to the ACLU after it was dismissed, when there was no evidence to support the ACLU's claims.

One columnist also criticized the settlement at the time because it "does put the ACLU, a non- governmental entity, in a quasi-official oversight role." (Arizona Republic Bob Robb column, 8/6/06). Installing the ACLU, an infamous lobby for the rights of criminals, as an official regulator of the conduct of Arizona police officers apparently is without precedent in Arizona or any other state. Thomas called it "stunning that my opponent approved making the ACLU a judge of police officers' conduct on the job."

Thomas added, "This sweetheart deal for the ACLU was wrong in every possible way. The payout of $140,000 to the ACLU's lawyers, the establishment of the ACLU as a quasi-governmental entity regulating state police officers, and the unprecedented requirement of written consent for vehicle searches make clear that if elected, my opponent would practice ACLU politics at the County Attorney's Office."

Nelson has bragged that in the ACLU case against DPS, he "defended state police officers against allegations of racial profiling" (East Valley Tribune, 5/19/08). In fact, the opposite is true. Nelson rolled over and signed off on a settlement with numerous concessions, including compensation to his former client, the ACLU, without any evidence of racial profiling by DPS troopers. As an Assistant DPS Director said at the time, "We're adamant that our officers were not racial-profiling." (Arizona Republic, 2/3/05)

Thomas stated that Nelson's concealment of his role in this settlement, and his false claim that he "defended" DPS troopers in the matter, show Nelson is not only disingenuous but "would be a pawn in the hands of the ACLU if elected county attorney."

Just as troubling, the ACLU currently has a lawsuit pending against Sheriff Arpaio and County Attorney Thomas seeking to block enforcement of Proposition 100. A referendum written by the County Attorney's Office and passed by 78 percent of the voters in 2006, Prop 100 denied the right to bail for illegal immigrants accused of serious felonies. The ACLU has sued in federal court to overturn this measure (Lopez- Valenzuela v. Maricopa County).

Attorneys at the left-wing law firm Perkins Coie, which represents the illegal-immigrant plaintiffs in the case, are serving as co-counsel for the ACLU. Nelson is a former law partner at Perkins Coie, and its attorneys have contributed heavily to his campaign. Attorneys, spouses and staff at this firm have given $8,545 to date to the Nelson campaign.

"There's every reason to expect that if elected, Nelson will roll over and pay off the ACLU and its attorneys again in the Prop 100 litigation the same way he did for his former ACLU colleagues in the DPS case. If so, the will of the voters who approved Prop 100 will be nullified. And taxpayer money once again will be paid out in a frivolous case to an organization that consistently supports the rights of criminals over the rights of law-abiding citizens."

Nelson served as the lawyer of record for the ACLU in at least one case, in which he sued to overturn the City of Gilbert's proclamation of Bible Week in 1999.

Highlights Mitchell's Anti-Drilling Voting Record
Scottsdale, AZ – Today, David Schweikert, the former Maricopa County Treasurer running for Congress in Arizona's Fifth Congressional District, says Americans are serious about using home-grown resources for energy.

That is why I have called for increased domestic and offshore exploration, drilling in ANWR, more refinery capacity and investing in alternative sources of energy including solar, wind and biofuels,” Schweikert said following the morning’s press conference.

AFP: Special Budget Session. Second the motion. All in favor?

Dear Arizona Taxpayer:

Steve Voeller of the Arizona Free Enterprise Club sent out a release yesterday (http://azfec.org/press/pr/pr-9-19-08.pdf), suggesting that the Governor call the Legislature into special session to deal with the budget. As AFP Arizona has explained to anyone who will listen, the FY2009 budget is the most unbalanced budget in Arizona history, and it is becoming more unbalanced with each day that passes. If nothing is done until January, we will start the new session in January with a deficit well in excess of $2 billion dollars (about $1,000 per Arizona household). At some point in the near future, with deficits as far as the eye can see, even non-liberal legislators will be sorely tempted to raise taxes (“find new sources of revenue”) to bridge the gap.

http://www.americansforprosperity.org/includes/filemanager/files/az/azgenfund0312senatebudgetfy09.pdf

There is a public-choice economic argument to be made for having a special budget session occur after the November 4th election. The idea is that after the election, the Guv and legislators (including a few lame ducks) will be more likely to make tough decisions and vote their consciences, rather than pushing off tough decisions about budget reductions into the future (as the prevailing majority did back in June).

One problem with that argument is that many of the lame ducks—including Tom O’Halleran (R-Yavapai County), Pete Hershberger (R-Tucson/OV), and Jennifer Burns (R-Tucson/Cochise) DID vote their consciences back in June. Unfortunately for Arizona taxpayers, their consciences seem to be fiscally liberal, in favor of ever-expanding government…

How You Can Help Defeat Prop 202 (watering down the employer sanctions law)

from Don Goldwater

Need Your Help

Please attend one or all of the Secretary of State's Town Hall meetings and voice your opinions on the propositions that will be on the 2008 general election ballot in November. In particular, we need you to attend these meetings and voice strong opposition to Prop 202 the inaccurately named "Stop Illegal Hiring Act (aka: "The Employer Amnesty Act").

Once again the fight will be the grassroots against those in big business that claim they can only survive by exploiting those who are here illegally at the expense and safety of their neighbors, community, and state.

SOS Web site logo

Arizona Secretary of State Jan Brewer and her staff will conduct a series of town hall meetings around the state to educate the public about the General Election ballot propositions. These meetings are free and open to the public. An invitation has been extended to the known ballot proposition support and opposition groups to participate in the discussions.

Goldwater Institute: Legislature’s magic act makes funds disappear

By Clint Bolick

During law school, I mostly fell asleep during trusts, wills, and estates. But one lesson pierced the slumber: when you have a trustee relationship with someone, you'd better take it seriously.
